RESIDUAL GHOST: Picking up the Broken Shiny Pieces
At the time when what-was-to-be Residual Ghost was recorded, Gillian was playing bass in a 3-piece band called Photon Dynamo and the Shiny Pieces, a bushwick based band with a neighborhood-cult following. Their plan with this third album was to feature the songwriting of the bass player (Gillian) for the first time. However, immediately after recording, the band teamed up with longtime friend and producer Jim Bentley to make what would be their last album and the tracks on Residual Ghost were quickly put on the back-burner, forgotten about, and never released.
Some time passed and their drummer skipped town. A few months later Jim passed away suddenly. Though the remaining 2 members persevered on their own for a few months, the band eventually fell apart.
These tracks were almost completely lost in the shuffle. Scrambling through old emails and dropbox accounts to find each song in whatever state it was in was the only hope for putting out the album. Shadow Monster was birthed after the band broke up, Gillian salvaged what she could, and the result is Residual Ghost.
Residual Ghost is a memoir of sorts. The album was conceptualized, birthed and bred in Bushwick and acts as a time capsule of the DIY scene that thrived there before rent got so damn high and everyone became so fucking interested. Jim Bentley produced the 2 acoustic tracks on the album in his studio (and home) The Fort. These acoustic tracks were recorded in between the band’s smoke breaks during practice.
This album is dedicated to Jim.
